Traumatic Injuries

What Is A Traumatic Injury?

As endodontists we are specialists in dental trauma. A traumatic dental injury is damage to your tooth or the surrounding areas that happens suddenly, usually due to an accident or impact. These injuries can be complex, and can often affect multiple teeth. Injuries of this nature should be evaluated as soon as possible, and followed up frequently. The injuries often involve a degree of lifelong monitoring. Sometimes the best initial treatment is to simply start monitoring the area, other times one or more teeth might need immediate root canal therapy. In some cases one or more teeth may have such a bad prognosis that extraction is the best option.

1. Types of injuries: Depending on the impact, you might have experienced:

  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • A loose tooth
  • A tooth that's been pushed out of position
  • A completely knocked-out tooth
  • Injury to your gums, lips, or jaw

2. Potential consequences: These injuries can affect:

  • The appearance of your smile
  • Your ability to bite and chew
  • The health of the injured tooth and surrounding teeth
  • In some cases, it might lead to infection if not treated properly

3. Treatment options: The treatment will depend on the severity of your injury, but may include:

  • Bonding or filling for minor chips
  • Root canal therapy if the tooth's inner pulp is damaged
  • Repositioning and splinting for loose or displaced teeth
  • Reimplantation for knocked-out teeth (if done quickly)
  • In severe cases, extraction and replacement with an implant or bridge

4. Recovery: The healing process varies depending on the injury, but it's crucial to:

  • Follow all aftercare instructions carefully
  • Maintain good oral hygiene
  • Attend all follow-up appointments
  • Be patient, as some injuries may take weeks or months to fully heal

5. Prevention: In the future, you can reduce the risk of similar injuries by:

  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports
  • Avoiding using your teeth as tools to open things
